What Can Skin Needling Do For You?

by Ades ~ September 5th, 2008

200566180-0071 What Can Skin Needling Do For You?

One study showed that there was a significant deposit of collagen and elastin in the skin six months after treatment, as well as a 40% increase in the thickness of the dermis. One advantage of percutaneous collagen induction (as the treatment is also called) is that, unlike lasers or chemical peels, skin needling can be applied to any skin type- even those with sensitive skin. Needling has also been shown to decrease the appearance of scars because the deposits of collagen are able to fill depressions and allow patients a resurgence in skin texture.

Some have also been able to use at-home devices on other areas of the body, namely on cellulite on the thighs with successful results.

New Treatment Alert: Skin Needling

needling New Treatment Alert: Skin Needling

Skin needling is the latest trend to hit the anti-aging world.

A tiny handheld tool outfitted with steel tines is run over the face (or body) to spur collagen formation and increase the penetration of topical serums. Think about it: when gardeners want to regenerate an aging lawn, they aerate it with a spiked wheel to allow oxygen, water and other nutrients to penetrate the roots.

Don’t worry, it isn’t as scary as it sounds. The tiny needles on the wheel are only 1-3 millimeters in length, and the procedure actually has much less potential for scarring than laser treatments. The result is increased collagen production and a decrease in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, giving you a resurgence in the vitality of your skin.

Stay tuned for more on this groundbreaking anti-aging procedure.

10 Years Younger: Perfectly Pouty Lips

Lip

Lip Liner: As the lip becomes less defined and tiny lines start to appear, lip liner will now become your star player. To avoid ring-around-the-lip, use a lip pencil in a sheer, glossy texture. The result is subtle and modern.

Lipstick: Beige and brown lipstick may look more natural, but it’s the brighter shades like cranberry and cherry that really complement fading skin tones and give your skin a resurgence, taking years off! Go for the sheerest texture you can find and dab it on with your finger for a pouty look.

Shine On!

A bright lipstick with a hint of sparkle and a face powder infused with shimmer and a tinge of glow can make you look years younger. Wonder how? The sparkly particles illuminate your prettiest features subtly yet noticeably. Just make sure to keep it to just one feature at a time, or you’ll risk looking like a disco ball.

Some great finds:

MAC Lipglass Pencil in Neutralzone, $13.50.

Lancome Color Fever Lipstick in Fashion Crave Framboise, $24.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Italian Cherry, $28.

Wet ‘n’ Wild Wild Shine Lipstick in Jaded Shine, $1.99.

10 Years Younger: The Face

Cheeks & Jawline

Cream Blush: Cheek color is so essential for a resurgence in the appearance of your skin that it calls for two steps. First, start with a cream blush in a shade that matches your skin’s natural flush; a creamy texture is ideal for older, drier skin. Blend with your fingers, keeping color just on the apples or the cheeks.

Powder Blush: Go for a shade that’s brighter than you usually wear for that extra pop of color that mature skin needs. Dusting it over the cream blush- with a brush this time- will make the look last for hours.

Contouring: Makeup artists love this trick because it brings back that definition that makes you look polished and put-together. Take a darker foundation or powder and rub it along your neck and right underneath the jaw. The goal is to have the color emulate the natural shadow that’s already there.

Some great products:

Benefit Sheer Cream Blusher in Hush! $18.

Lorac Perfectly Lit Luminizing Oil-Free Powder in Luminous, $32.

10 Years Younger: Your Eyes

by Ades ~ August 29th, 2008

Eyes

Eyeliner: Time to define those eyes! Line your upper lash line with a richly colored liner, but not black, which is too harsh. Also, don’t line underneath the eyes, this will only make you look tired. Keep your line thin; a thick line will close up your eyes. A liner pencil may be easiest to use, but a cream liner or shadow applied with a brush are also options.

Eye Shadow: Remember that light-colored shadows attract light and dark-colored shadows absorb light, so choose pinky or beige shadows for the lids to direct the attention there, helping to brighten your eyes. Follow with a dark shade, brown or gray are good choices, along the bone of your crease to help “firm” up a saggy lid. This trick is akin to putting on that little black dress when you want to look thinner.

Defined Brows: A well-groomed brow is even more essential as we age. Fill in any gaps using feathery strokes with a pencil that’s a shade lighter than your brown hair. Also, avoid hard, drawn-in lines, or you’ll risk the Joan Crawford look! To further lift the eyes and see a resurgence in the overall appearance of your face, experts recommend defining along the top part of the brow; start a tad in from the inner edge and concentrating on the peak. Soften any lines with a cotton swab.

What to avoid: Anything with heaps of glitter. A subtle shimmer is flattering, but globs of glitter makeup over wrinkles screams, “Look at me!”

Toss anything that’s too chalky or dry. A soft, touchable texture is the key to making up a younger-looking face. So long chalky powder and dry, matte lipstick!

Steer clear of the little-girl pastels. Baby blue and cotton-candy-pinky palettes may look young, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll make you look younger.

Up Next: Chiseled cheeks and jawline!

Facial Skin

Primer: Because of its rougher texture, mature skin doesn’t always hold on to color for long, making primer a makeup essential. The newest formulas not only create a smooth surface that color can adhere to, but they contain light-reflecting particles that instantly wake up a dull complexion. Spread it all over the face and let set.

Light Foundation: Piling on a heavy layer of foundation or powder will only make lines and wrinkles stand out more. Instead, use a bristle brush to concentrate coverage around key areas such as the nose, forehead and chin. This will give you a more natural effect than slathering on a thick coating over your face.

Concealer: When applied to the inner corner of the eye to the mid-pupil, concealer brightens up the eye like nothing else. Start with three dots right near the tear duct and blend with your ring finger or a brush. Add more if necessary, but don’t layer concealer over the fine lines near the outer corners of the eyes.

Stay tuned for a few more tips that will give you a resurgence in the life of your skin.

Look 10 Years Younger in 10 Minutes

by Ades ~ August 26th, 2008

80283171 Look 10 Years Younger in 10 Minutes

There’s plenty to love about being over 40, but it’s not always so fun to stand in front of the mirror and be reminded of how you once looked. The most important thing you can do for yourself to give you that beautiful, fresh face again? Change your makeup routine to suit your mature skin. In just minutes, the characteristics of a young looking face- big eyes, high brows, defined cheekbones and pouty lips, can be yours again.

Facing Facts

Brows and Lashes: It’s true- your brows have gotten thinner because as we age, our hair thins. The brow itself may also sit lower on the face because of the loss of collagen and elastin that causes sagging. Your lashes may also become skimpier and wimpier.

Upper Lids: Don’t be surprised if your eyes remain puffy long after you’ve woken up. Everything from decreased circulation to loss of elasticity could be to blame.

Under Eyes: Dark circles only get darker with time. Some likely culprits are thinning skin, which brings the veins closer tot he surface, and the disappearance of fat pads that sit below the eyes, which cause shadowed to reflect off of the hallows, darkening the area.

Skin: Wrinkles set up permanent residence on your face. Your skin is probably drier too, because of decreased oil production and hormonal fluctuations. Years of sun exposure have also caused damage, resulting in uneven pigmentation and dark spots. Finally, a slowdown in cell turnover leaves you with a pileup of dead skin cells and a duller, rougher texture.

Lips: The natural fullness of our once young lips becomes a thing of the past. The lip loses definition due to sun damage and loss of elasticity. Also, some women develop vertical lines etched around the mouth.

Jaw and Neck: Gravity’s pull, coupled with the loss of collagen and elastin, contribute to the loss of definition along the contours of the face.

Stay tuned for a few essential makeup tips to help you combat the signs of aging on your face and experience a resurgence in skin vitality.

by Ades ~ August 25th, 2008

blue Hormonal Aging & Vitamin C continued...

Recent studies have shown that vitamin C can also help to shield the body of those harmful, aging free radicals we encounter every day. So how should you take your daily vitamin C supplement? Supplements for vitamin C will typically come in the form of absorbic acid. This is better absorbed in the presence of flavonoids, so many manufacturers also add flavonoids to their formulas.

There are also a number of fruits you can eat to increase your daily intake. While many people first think of the citrus fruits as being jam packed with vitamin C, strawberries actually contain a much higher dose. Blueberries score even higher, and the winner outright are Acai berries- one of the latest anti-aging super foods. Also great for vitamin C are all the colorful veggies in your supermarket; red bell peppers are a winner as are all of those green leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, watercress and rocket.

So how much should you take? Well first off, you can never take too much. Vitamin C is water soluble, so your body will eliminate any excess. While the official recommended daily amount is only 60mg, recent studies have shown that much larger doses are not only safe, but also very beneficial. Many anti-aging experts suggest 500mg a day up to 1000mg.

So, the lesson is, listen to your mother and up your intake of healthy fruits and vegetables. And for super-charged anti-aging health benefits, add a vitamin C supplement to your daily routine. Be patient, it may take a few months before you being seeing results, but rest assured, this anti-aging supplement will have you seen a resurgence in your skin and overall health in no time.

How Vitamin C Can Help Fight Hormonal Aging

by Ades ~ August 22nd, 2008

81715474 How Vitamin C Can Help Fight Hormonal Aging

If you’re not doing it already, you need to add a vitamin C supplement to your daily routine.

Getting an adequate amount of vitamin C is essential if you’re going to age well and look good as you get older. Vitamin C is vital for the formation and maintenance of connective tissue, which is so important to anti-aging. Put simply, it’s good for your skin and helps to prevent and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You’ll never see a resurgence in the health and vitality of your skin without it.

Not only will vitamin C improve the health of your skin, it plays a crucial role in the regulation and release of energy for your body. Insufficient intake of vitamin C on a daily basis will result in low levels of energy and reduces vitality. In fact, studies have shown a correlation between low vitamin C levels and obesity. Even if you’re consuming fresh, leafy greens ever day, you still may not be getting enough of this anti-aging miracle supplement. Here are some facts you need to know:

What are the benefits of taking a vitamin C supplement? Better overall health, quicker healing and repairing of connective tissues, (including wrinkles), and it gives a boost to your immune system. The best way to tell if you’re getting enough vitamin C in your diet is simply to observe your health. Are you more susceptible to colds and minor ailments, or does it take you longer to heal? You may be vitamin C deficient. Also, smokers tend to be severely vitamin C deficient, or, for the benefit of your skin and your health, try kicking the habit all together.

Vitamin C will also help your intake of other essential vitamins and nutrients, such as iron, which is essential to female health. Vitamin C also works with vitamin E to boost antioxidants, which is great for anti-aging.
